  • The four group rooms are located at the third floor. The Group Room 1 (4 persons) and The Big Group Room (8 persons) are bookable free of charge. You may book the rooms for maximum three hours per day and up to two weeks in advance with the calendar below. The Big Group Room has a data projector. 

    The Group Rooms 2 (4 persons) and 3 (4 persons) can be used without a reservation.

  • Main library’s music department has four soundproof music practice rooms, which you can reserve for your private use free of charge.

    The rooms can be booked for maximum two hours per day and no further than two weeks in advance. Please, cancel your reservation if you can’t make it: click the link in the confirmation e-mail. 

    NOTE: Problems have been detected in some of the reservations. The top of the confirmation e-mail might be incorrect. However, the booking time indicated at the bottom of the e-mail should be correct.

    The four music practice rooms have:

    • Band and karaoke room Komppi is equipped with band instruments (electro-acustic guitar with metal strings, electric guitar and bass, acoustic guitar, ukulele, keyboard, electric drum set, and vocal microphone), DJ set (2 turntables + Serato-mixer), karaoke kit and Cubase recording software. Browse the selection of karaoke songs here: http://singa.com/uk/songs.  You can also practise singing and playing music with Rockway video tutorials in Komppi.
    • The big music room has an acoustic piano and a guitar.
    • Practice room 1 has an acoustic piano and a guitar.
    • Practice room 2 has an electric piano (Roland HP-505) and an acoustic guitar.

    You can bring your own instrument as well.

    Please notice, that fragrances cause headache and nausea to many people. Please, use fragrances moderately.

    The rooms are meant for private use only, not for professional teaching purposes. The rooms cannot be booked for interviews, study groups, or any other such activities that are not related to music.

  • Three Work Pods are located at the third floor. The Work Pods are soundproof and ventilated. Each Work Pod offers space for up to 4 people.

    The Work Pod 1 is bookable free of charge. You may book the pod for maximum three hours per day and up to two weeks in advance with the calendar below. The other Work Pods can be used without a reservation.

  • The music department is located on the third floor of the Main Library.

    Our music collection consists of CDs, LPs, sheet music, study scores, instrument guides, music books, DVDs and musical instruments.

    The department has music players with headsets for customers who want to listen to music in the library.

    There are four soundproof music practice rooms in the music department, a digitizing room and a copying machine.

  • From the shelves of the Young Adults' department, you can pick up fantasy and horror as well as poems and non-fiction books. You can also find movies and audiobooks for young adults here. The department's sofas invite you to spend time: you can read magazines, play games with a group, or simply spend time with your own thoughts. Welcome to have a good time!

  • The children's department is a place for learning and enjoyment. Whether you are looking for poetry, facts about the Vikings, music, comics or story books, we can help you. Here you can do homework or otherwise just spend time alone or together with others. Eating small snacks is also allowed. However, it is good to keep books away from snacks. The children's department also has changing exhibitions for children. Welcome to the children's department!

  • The Stage is on the ground floor and is used for events.

  • The Fairytale Room Peukaloinen organizes events and activities aimed at children. You can find more information in the Keski libraries' event listing.

Service 13 services

  • The library has accessible entrance, accessible parking, accessible toilet, elevator, a collection of books in large print (in Finnish), induction loop.

    Only assistant dogs are allowed inside the library.

  • There is a shelf on the ground floor of the library, where customers can bring their own books and take some in exchange. Please only bring clean and undamaged books.

  • At the book stop you have a chance to get to know newly published finnish literature.

    The book stop is located on the 2nd floor of the main library next to the "jännitys" section. 

    You can’t bring the books on display home, but you can read them at the book stop. If you do wish to take one home, you can make a reservation at the customer service desk or online.

  • The Books home -service is available for customers who cannot use the library services on their own.

  • Fees can be paid in cash during service hours.

    You can pay for prints and copies with coins on the ground floor of the library even when customer service is closed.

  • Fees can be paid by credit card during service hours.

  • Digitizing room is situated on the third floor

    In the digitizing room, you can 

    • convert VHS tapes, 8mm tapes, compact cassettes and LPs, to CDs or other digital formats
    • scan slides, negatives and cinéfilms

    The room can be booked free of charge for maximum four hours per day and no further than two weeks in advance.

    Reservation Calendar

  • Located at Vapaudenkatu and Cygnaeuksenkatu entrance

    You can return books to the drop boxes 24/7 until further notice. However, it is worth noting that the returns will not necessarily be returned until the next day, even if the returns are left in the drop box during the library's opening hours. The drop box is located next to the stairs on the Vapaudenkatu side. The accessible drop box is located at the entrance on the Cygnaeuksenkatu side.

  • Groups can visit the main library on their own whenever the library is open. With a guided visit, you can familiarize yourself with the library's facilities and offerings, or hear reading tips and learn how to use the online library. If you would like a guide for your group during the visit, please make an appointment for your visit in advance at the address kirjastovierailut.paakirjasto@jkl.fi.

  • Kindergarten groups can order a bag of books already collected for their group by filling out the Main Library's order form. You can find more information about ordering and delivery conditions here (in Finnish).

  • You can pick up reserved items from the reservation shelves on the ground floor and borrow them using the self-service machine. 

    Some items, for example games, are exeptions to this. Please ask the customer service on the ground floor for them.

  • Discarded books and other items are sold at cheap prices on the ground floor of the library.
